[poky] Unexpected dependencies of task-machine-base

What is the mechanism by which task-machine-base (from task-base.bb)
ends up requiring matchbox, eds, and all other sorts of
application-level software to be installed into an image?

If I manually override IMAGE_INSTALL not to include that, the image
contains only basic system-level utilities and daemons. But I don't
find any X11, Matchbox, Contacts, or other similar RDEPENDS metioned
in task-base.bb.
